In the away game of the FIBA Europe Cup against the Greek Peristeri our team was defeated - 70:80 (11:17, 14:19, 25:24, 20:20).
Starting fives
Tsmoki-Minsk: Angelo Warner, Yauheni Beliankou, Jason Clark, Stefan Jankovic, Darol Zinenko.
Peristeri: Dimitris Katsivelis, Terran Petteway, Erik McCree, L. Chrysikopoulos, Chad Brown.
Game scenario
Tsmoki-Minsk started the meeting with an effective spurt 10: 2. Clark put down 2 threes plus Warner and Hernandez-Zinenko scored from the mid-range. Alas, the optimism was extinguished by Hagins who came from the bench - he did not play in the Minsk game due to injury. Within 2 minutes, the American sniper scored 8 points and returned parity.
And it just started all over again. The only difference is that the hosts scored almost after every combination, while our players got into a streak of fatal bad luck. The ball completely refused to fall into the basket, no matter what the Dragons would come up with in the frontcourt. The failure turned out to be too sensitive, Peristeri ran into the lead by 19 points.
Tsmoki-Minsk managed to break the vicious circle only in the middle of the second period. Clarke and Warner came to the rescue: the first one accurately threw from the perimeter, and the second earned free throws and implemented them clearly. In the first half, the Dragons conceded only 36 points - that's good, but it's bad that they themselves scored very little - only 25. By the way, 22 of them were scored by Clark and Warner.
In the 3rd quarter, the pair of Tsmoki-Minsk leaders finally began to receive effective shooting assistance from their partners. Points were scored by Dodoo, Beliankou, Hernandez-Zinenko, Blizniuk. The frightening lag behind the Greek squad began to decrease gradually. On the 27th minute, Beliankou brought it to the minimum with a long-range shot - 46:52. Unfortunately, Petteway caught the courage in the end, and with 2 threes returned the hosts a double-digit advantage.
The dragons tried in every possible way to reduce the difference in the score, in order to try to get closer to the owners in the end. Alas, it was not possible to get closer than 7 points to the opponent.
Prominent roles
American guards of Tsmoki-Minsk Angelo Warner and Jason Clark, like a locomotive, dragged their partners along, gaining most of the team points during the game. Their role was especially important in a difficult period when it was necessary to stop the emotional impulse of Peristeri.
The number
88 - so many percent of the points scored by the Dragons in the 1st half belong to two players - Angelo Warner and Jason Clark.
Rostislav Vergun, head coach:
Looking at the stats sheet, 17 turnovers is way too many to play and compete away against a team which played quality basketball. I have no problems about our effort, besides the fact that several key players did not show up today. With big minuses like this, with a big stretch 17-2, it's too naive to think that you have chances of winning on the road. Congratulations to Peristeri. We will now prepare for the two home games, we have to improve in quality in all game aspects.
